Fred Cuny was a well-known figure in the international relief and development community. He was involved in the response to crises in Africa (including Biafra and the Great Lakes), Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the Balkans. Through Intertect, the Dallas-based organization that he founded thirty years ago, he and others provided technical assistance and training to U.N. and U.S. government organizations and to NGOs. He disappeared on a mission to Chechnya on behalf of the Soros Foundation in March 1995 and is thought to have been executed. He collaborated with the Project on a variety of undertakings.
