Julie Mertus is an assistant professor at the Department of International Peace and Conflict Resolution at American University's School of International Service. A graduate of Yale Law School, she was formerly a fellow in human rights at Harvard Law School, a Fulbright Professor in Romania, a MacArthur Foundation fellow, and an attorney with Human Rights Watch. Her books include: Kosovo: How Myths and Truths Started a War (University of California Press, 1999); Local Action/ Global Change: Learning About the Human Rights of Women and Girls (UNIFEM, 1999); and The Suitcase: Refugees' Voices from Bosnia and Croatia (University of California Press, 1999) (editor). She is presently working on a textbook on international law and the former Yugoslavia (with Richard Falk).
